The Iron Lady-Whatever your politics, it will be fascinating to see how this biographical film about Margaret Thatcher plays out. Ken Loach wasn’t available, so ‘Mamma Mia!’ director Phyllida Llloyd takes the helm of a script by Abbie Morgan (‘Brick Lane’, ‘Shame’), while Meryl Streep takes the role of the Iron Lady herself, Maggie, Mrs T or, as she was known to her enemies (and there were many), That Bitch. Jim Broadbent plays Denis Thatcher, while Olivia Colman plays the Thatchers’ daughter, Carol. Rumour has it that the film sees Thatcher looking back at her life from old age, so we see episodes from her younger days and her later career from the perspective of the end of her life.
The Iron Lady- This is a film which, at least in Britain, will be endlessly debated and written about and is bound to inspire furious arguments as to the legacy of her government from 1979 to 1990. Whether audiences will warm to a movie treatment of such a divisive figure, in the way they did with ‘The Queen’, will be interesting to witness. The filmmakers will doubtlessly be hoping to avoid the flop that was ‘Nixon’.
